Swann was a pioneer of fantasy, active in a period (early to mid-1960s) when very little fantasy was published, particularly in the United States. (Most of his work appeared in the British magazine Science Fantasy) He wrote of mythology and the Classical world with great feeling. The classic title story is told from the point of view of a Sylvan who befriended Remus, the brother of Romulus. Vashti is about a wife of Xerxes the Great, who was suspected of being a djinn.

89851 The Witches of Karres 89851 James H. Schmitz Sci-Fi 1970 c.1966, 1970; Leo and Diane Dillon This is one of the ACE Science Fiction Specials (1st Series).  Note that the date is not on the copyright page.  An AIL user (thank you Bill) indicates that the publisher on the title page includes “A Division of Charter Communications” which only came into being in September 1970. In addition, the advertisements in the back are unnumbered, but later became numbered in November 1970. So this was printed either in September or October of that year.  Oh, the fun of tracking down ACE publication data.
