This Immortal first appeared in 1965 as a 50,000-word piece in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction entitled "... And Call Me Conrad." The next year (1966), it won Zelazny the first of his six Hugo awards, tying with Frank Herbert's Dune. For the novelization, Zelazny expanded the work by 8,000 words. In 1976, This Immortal won a Seiun Award for best novel translated into Japanese.

Howard and was not published within Howard's lifetime. El Borak, otherwise known as Francis Xavier Gordon, was a Texan gunfighter from El Paso who had travelled the world and settled in Afghanistan. The character was originally created when Howard was only ten years old but he did not see print until "The Daughter of Erlik Khan" in the December 1934 issue of Top-Notch. Although Howard best known for his fantasy fiction, the El Borak stories are straight adventure fiction and only Three-Bladed Doom contains a fantasy element.
